Reader beware: There are a lot of unpolished ideas here. Half baked thoughts, loosely connected associations, uninformed (but slowly becoming fully formed) opinions, pages waiting to be filled, and bullet points abound.

The Dispossessed by Ursula K. Le Guin

  • This is a fantastic line.

    (p. 5) “But the idea was real. It was important.”

  • I wonder how a dorm can look “mournful”?

    (p. 5) “The dormitory looked durable, grimy and mournful.”

  • What does “syndics” mean?

    (p. 6) “Freighters came down only eight times a year, unannounced except to syndics actually working at the port[…]”

  • This is a really interesting world building bit. Defence is apparently something not needed? And armbands differentiate people from each other.

    (p. 6) “She was wearing the Defense armband, a sight almost as rare as a space-ship.”

  • This is in a letter from Takver to Shevek. I found this passage interesting because you can feel Takver and Shevek straying from their “anarchist” culture. They were originally already defying some norms (they are “partnered” after all) so this seems to reinforce their partnership as somewhat odd.

    (p. 210) “[S]eparation is educational all right but your presence is the education I want.”

  • I don’t remember why I bookmarked this line specifically.

    (p. 284)
